Spelman College Glee Club
when: Sat, January 18, 2014
where: Ronald And Lynda Nutt Theatre
time: 7:00pm
As part of the MLK weekend Celebration, the Spelman College Glee Club will perform in the Ronald and Lynda Nutt Theatre.
The Spelman College Glee Club has maintained a reputation of choral excellence for more than
50 years. It is an organization that is open by audition to all students of the College community.
Repertoire consists of sacred and secular choral literature for women’s voices with special
emphasis on traditional spirituals, music by African-American composers, music from many
cultures and commissioned works.
The Spelman College Glee Club has traveled throughout the country performing for a variety of
audiences. It has performed in concert halls such as Fanueil Hall in Boston, the Brooklyn
Academy of Music, Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center and in churches, high schools, colleges,
and universities. Their international travels have taken them to Brazil and Canada.
The Glee Club is the primary performance organization of the College and sings for most
campus events. It has had the unique opportunity to perform with the Atlanta Symphony
Orchestra and world-renowned singer Jessye Norman, and in the annual Martin Luther King Jr.
birthday celebration.
The Glee Club has also been featured on "Performance Today" for National Public Radio. A
perennial highlight of the Christmas season in Atlanta is the Christmas Carol Concert presented
by both the Spelman and Morehouse colleges glee clubs. The audience swells to more than 6,000
for the three nights of these festive concerts. Other major performances of the Spelman Glee
Club include the spring concert tour, the annual fall and spring concerts at Spelman.
Past directors include the late Willis Laurence James, Dr. Roland Allison and Dr. Norma
Raybon. The Spelman Glee Club is under the direction of Dr. Kevin Johnson, associate professor
of music.
